After spine surgery, having your own living space again is like no other feeling. Until you completely recover, you'll probably need some support with daily tasks. You may want to consider having a few essential post-surgery devices on hand to recover quickly.

With quad canes, you can increase your stability after surgery. These canes are available under different brand names. The cane's design also makes it easy to use when your hands are busy.

After surgery, mobility can be limited and challenging. One solution that can aid in this process is using a quad cane. A quad cane has four prongs at the bottom, providing extra stability and support compared to a regular cane.

Using a quad cane can help distribute weight more evenly and reduce the risk of falls or further injury. It can also provide added support when navigating stairs or uneven surfaces.

It is important to properly adjust the height of the quad cane to ensure it is the appropriate length for your height. Additionally, proper technique is essential for safe and effective use of the quad cane. Your healthcare provider or physical therapist can guide and instruct on proper quad cane use.

Overall, a quad cane can be a valuable tool in aiding mobility during post-surgery recovery, providing added stability and support for the user.

Grabbers

Grabbers may make reaching or extending your arms easier after spine surgery. These plastic extensions have a squeeze-controlled grip to reach items on higher shelves.

Toilet risers

The riser in your toilet can make going to the bathroom a lot easier, especially if you drink a lot of liquids or take medications that affect your bathroom habits. Some toilet risers come with handrails to make them more stable.

Portable handrails and shower rails

Portable handrails and shower rails are a great alternatives to permanent ones. Suction cups help to attach portable handrails or shower rails to tiled surfaces.

Leg circulators

During recovery from surgery, leg circulation devices can help when difficulty walking. A device of this type consists of inflatable plastic placed around the legs and pumped with air to stimulate blood flow.

Bed assists

In the aftermath of spinal fusion surgery, getting up may be difficult. Using bed assists can ease this task, allowing you to extend your legs over the bed and lift yourself with handles.

Heating pads

The doctor may prescribe heating pads for you for the first few days to alleviate discomfort and pain after surgery. Depending on your situation, you might also want to use them on the parts of your body that weren't operated on; for example, you might wish to a heating pad for your neck if your back has just had surgery.

Mini fridge

The best thing to do is not to run up and down the stairs during your first few days of recovery at home. Mini fridges allow you to keep water, juice, and other necessities in your room during the day. Keeping your juice and snacks cool is cheaper with a cooler filled with ice.

Nutritional supplements

Some surgeons recommend vitamin C, zinc, and essential branched-chain amino acids as supplements to assist in healing. Furthermore, many hospitals implement Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols to address malnutrition and improve protein intake. Discussing these with your surgeon about these supplements is important.

Extra pillows

The right pillows can add a lot of support. If you lie on your back or are reclining, place one under your knees to relieve low back stress. You can tuck a pillow between your knees if you sleep on your side. While lying in bed, prop yourself up with firm cushions.

45-degree wedge pillow, recliner, and doughnut cushions

Sitting for a few weeks after surgery can be painful or uncomfortable. The best thing to do is to avoid sitting for long periods. You can use a 45-degree wedge pillow at night to assist with comfort and positioning.

Inflatable doughnut pillows and hemorrhoids pillows make sitting more comfortable, and recliners can ease pressure on your lower back. The postoperative recovery period may be shortened if you rent an adjustable bed undergoing extensive surgery.

Shower mat

You can keep your slips and falls to a minimum in the shower area by installing an anti-slip mat.

Shower brush with a long handle

You won't need to bend, twist, or reach to get clean using a long-handled body brush when using liquid soap.

Shower seat and rails

Installation of these tools may make your recovery easier if you need assistance moving around in the bathtub and sitting down while taking a shower.

Toilet riser

Using the restroom frequently will be immensely helpful, especially if you are a woman. The most beneficial risers have handrails for leaning on.

Cane or walker

Using a cane or walker can assist you in walking more steadily; if that is the case, your doctor can help you obtain one.

Reclining lift chair

The recliner seat may help ease discomfort by raising your legs and upper back. Sitting in a recliner with your feet above heart level allows gravity to reduce stress and inflammation naturally.

If you don't have a recliner, you can create the same effect with pillows underneath your legs and behind your back. The position boosts circulation and accelerates recovery after surgery.

For this reason, most doctors recommend a recliner for recovering patients. The zero gravity position is extremely relaxing and safe for those recovering from numerous types of surgery (especially back and leg procedures).

It is also beneficial to sit cushioned, such as an inflatable doughnut pillow or hemorrhoid pillow, to alleviate pressure on the lower back. An adjustable bed may be helpful for postoperative recovery if you are having extensive surgery.

Your doctor or board-certified spine surgeon can recommend devices if you are unsure what you need. If you do not wish to purchase temporary devices, you'll only use them briefly; some medical supply companies rent them for an affordable fee.

Most insurance companies cover devices such as bath chairs, toilet seat risers, walkers, and canes. Have your doctor send you these tools if possible. Most medical supply stores rent or sell these items, which are also available second-hand (and at a low price).

Preparation for surgery is equally important, as is preparing for recovery afterward. Take advantage of these helpful tips and items if you have surgery coming up to ensure a smooth, fast, and uneventful recovery.
